Burglar alarm systems receive much attention for their potential to prevent crime, but homeowners are discovering that an alarm system can be tailored to fit other security needs. A monitoring system that detects intruders and alerts law enforcement agencies of possible break-ins increases the security of the home; however alarm systems are becoming more sophisticated and capabilities are expanding.
As the complexity and efficiency of alarm systems improves, the range of safety increases. For example, systems have been developed that detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless and deadly. Without detection systems, unsuspecting victims can suffer ill effects and eventual death from the accumulation of toxic carbon monoxide fumes in the home.
Alarm systems that detect smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide can now be integrated with alarm systems that detect intruders; the integrated system has the capability to notify appropriate agencies to respond to emergencies. The homeowner determines which combination of alarms and monitoring will be best for his/her security needs.
Options in Home Alarm Systems
In addition to considering other security features, the homeowner who is concentrating on protection from intruders must determine whether to utilize a motion detection system, wireless alarm system, surveillance cameras, door alarm and other features for the best home security. The myriad options make an in-depth consultation with an alarm system specialist a necessity for the homeowner who plans to purchase an alarm system.
During the consultation the home system alarm representative will determine the homeowner’s expectations for the security system, discuss the different features in detail, determine specific goals, and devise a customized plan for security.
Research the Alarm System Company
Some companies are disreputable and prey on homeowners’ fears of robbery, intrusion or simply deceive homeowners with the promise of a “good deal.” The homeowner, accordingly, has to conduct some research to ensure that he/she is dealing with a reputable company.
Consumer Reports posts a warning article, “Scam Alert: Don’t Get Ripped off by an Alarm Company” that cautions homeowners about scam artists who travel door-to-door with tempting offers of free alarm systems. The homeowner agrees to display a company logo in exchange for installation of the alarm system, but the system that is installed is non-functional and inefficient. The homeowner, however, is committed to pay for the monitoring services (the entity that responds to the alarm system) although the alarm system itself is free. Be wary of scams.
Some Tips in Evaluating the Alarm System Company
Some conditions and actions of a company's representative can indicate the company's level of reliability and professionalism.
- Consumer Reports educates homeowners about “How to spot a scam: Be alarmed if a salesman says he represents, or wears clothing with logos from, manufacturers like GE and Honeywell. These firms don’t sell directly to consumers and don’t allow their logos to be used by others.”
- Consumer Reports adds that if the company is traveling door-to-door with “vans ready to install your system today,” the company is almost certainly disreputable.
- Take the necessary time to consult with an alarm system specialist and attain a detailed analysis of personal security needs. Also read and understand your contract before signing. A reputable company will almost certainly afford the consumer the time to thoroughly evaluate a contract before signing
- Determine whether the alarm system installer is licensed. Underwriters Laboratories lists and audits alarm systems. This is one resource for evaluation.
- Test some elements of the system; for example if a motion detector is installed, move around in the area to see if the system can detect your movements.
- Evaluate how well the company representative responds to questions. The alarm system representative should be able to explain the monitoring system and provide details about any system features. Be wary of a salesperson who cannot answer question about system or who does not conduct an interview to determine your specific concerns.
- The representative should also carefully assess the unique location and requirements for protecting your residence.
Meeting Specific Security Needs - Medical Alarm System
Alarm systems can be tailored to meet specific needs. Another type of alarm system is the medical alarm system. This system may or may not be separate from an intruder alarm system. The reason that the services may not be combined is that the medical alert services must employ responders who are familiar with medical emergencies.
The medical alert alarm systems are increasing in popularity as the population ages and seniors, wanting to remain independent, opt for monitoring system designed to respond to medical emergencies or distress signals. This is one alternative for seniors who desire to reside in their own home rather than at a long-term care facility because they are at risk for falls and other injuries.
Alarm Systems for All Types of Emergencies
Alarm systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and the services provided go beyond intruder detection and extend to medical and fire emergencies. Corporations are trying to identify security concerns and develop unique alarm systems to meet consumer needs.
The result has been a marked increase in the sophistication, complexity, and efficiency of security alarm systems. Some disreputable companies have tried to profit from the new trends in security, but prospective customers who carefully evaluate home alarm system companies can find reputable providers to meet their needs.
